W.C. Handy "Father of the Blues "
Memphis, Tennessee is internationally known as the birthplace of the blues. In recent years a title that was once an honor for the city's musical legacy is now an accurate description of the living conditions of almost one third of the population of Memphis!
In September 2011 Memphis was declared the POOREST city in the nation! 26.2 % of the population of metro Memphis LIVE AT or BELOW the poverty line! With extremely limited access to quality health and social services the poor are often acutely ill before they get help. Many of them are Memphis musicians who share their talent with the WORLD , yet are adversely affected by illness or even die for lack or resources to assist them back to wellness after an illness. Although the poor can receive basic medical care, their living expenses like rent and food may go unpaid when they pay for prescriptions or miss work due to illness. Many times social and ancillary health services are unavailable to the uninsured OR under insured UNLESS Music Heals Memphis Inc. and the people who support us help them!
